"A love story of astonishing power and delicious comedy . . . humane, richly comic, almost unbearably touching and altogether extraordinary."
--Newsweek
“A rich, commodious novel whose narrative power is matched only by its generosity of vision.” --The New York Times
“A love story of astonishing power and delicious comedy . . . humane, richly comic, almost unbearably touching and altogether extraordinary. –Newsweek
“The greatest luxury, as in all of García Márquez’s books, is the eerie, entirely convincing suspension of the laws of reality . . . the agelessness of the human story as told by one of this century’s most evocative writers.” --Anne Tyler, Chicago Sun-Times Book Week
“Revolutionary in daring to suggest that vows of love made under a presumption of immortality—youthful idiocy, to some—may yet be honored, much later in life when we ought to know better, in the face of the undeniable. . . . . a shining and heartbreaking book” –Thomas Pynchon, The New York Times

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. First UK Edition. Fifth printing of the first UK edition, published in 1989. The book was very successful in the UK, and was reprinted three times in 1988 (the year of publication) and again in 1989. Translated from the Spanish by Edith Grossman. ***Very good in forest-green cloth-covered boards with gilt titles to the spine. The boards are quite clean but there is some staining affecting the back board (please see scans). Head and tail of spine slightly creased. Corners quite sharp - not bumped. Page block edges clean. No reading lean to the binding. Spine tight. Internally also very good, with no inscriptions. No creases or tears. No foxing. Pages clean. ***In a very good colour illustrated dustwrapper, which has not been price-clipped, retaining the original publisher's printed price of £11.95 net. The dustwrapper is complete, but there is a small closed tear at the top of the spine and some associated creasing. There is also a long scratch on the front panel (please see scans). Some general rubbing and light creasing at the extremities. No chips or loss. The spine of the dustwrapper shows some fading to the pale yellow colour, also slightly affecting the front panel near the spine. A few small marks. ***352 pages. 242mm x 165mm. ***'In a novel unequalled since his masterpiece "One Hundred Years of Solitude", Márquez tels a love story which will haunt and inspire his readers for generations.' (Quote taken from the front flap of the dustwrapper) ***A later fifth printing of the first UK edition. The book went through a number of reprints soon after first publication. A good reading copy in the original hardback format. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc. Seller Inventory # 9483
