The author, drawing from his own experience as a hobo, pictures life in the "main stem" of Halsted and State Streets in Chicago. Here are the customs and class distinctions, language, songs, morals and intellectual life of this body of men who, for widely varying reasons, chose the migratory life. A new introduction by the author places the hobo in historical perspective and explains his disappearance from the American scene.

About the Author

Anderson was a pioneer in the study of the homeless. He remains an extraordinary and underrated figure in the history of American sociology.

Booker T. Washington (1856-1915) was born a slave. He graduated from what is today Hampton University in 1875, and subsequently taught there. In 1881 he founded the forerunner of Tuskegee University. He made himself and his school two of the most well-known institutions in twentieth-century black America. He earned world-renowned recognition as an educator, social theorist, and spokesperson for African Americans.
