Reviews

Piet Mondrian's great contributions to modern art are redefined in this new critical study. The author is concerned with the visual, rather than theoretical, examination of selected important paintings. Issues of pictorial space, structure, and the all-important line are especially emphasized. Champa's deductions are serious, highly scholarly characterizations of Mondrian's travels through Expressionism, Cubism, and De Stijl to the pure formalism of his own uniquely non-objective painting. The art historical methodology applied within this book is extremely technical. Suitable for advanced degree and other specialized art research collections. Paula A.
