Although schools of law, medicine, and business are now highly respected, schools of education and the professionals they produce continue to be held in low regard. In Ed School, Geraldine Jonçich Clifford and James W. Guthrie attribute this phenomenon to issues of academic politics and gender bias as they trace the origins and development of the school of education in the United States.
Drawing on case studies of leading schools of education, the authors offer a bold, controversial agenda for reform: ed schools must reorient themselves toward teachers and away from the quest for prestige in academe; they must also adhere to national professional standards, abandon the undergraduate education major, and reject the Ph.D. in education in favor of the Ed.D.

Geraldine Jonçich Clifford and James W. Guthrie are both professors of education at the University of California, Berkeley.
In their carefully researched study of normal schools in a universitythat is, schools of educationeducational historian Clifford and educational policy analyst Guthrie argue that there has been insufficient effort to make teaching a highly regarded profession. Despite our nation's high regard for education, teachers themselves do not enjoy the prestige of, say, doctors or lawyers. The authors focus on a few graduate schools and departments of education in our country's most influential universities, examining their origins, history, problems, and future. Some of the reforms they suggest are perhaps controversial, but large libraries in need of material on teacher education should consider. Annette V. Janes, Director, Hamilton P.L., Mass.
