Synopsis

Laughing Waters: Herb and Jen is a joyful Jamaican childhood story about family, love, adventure, bonding, and the unforgettable places that shape a child's heart.

Herb and Jen, two Jamaican siblings, set off with their mother on a trip to their paradise called Laughing Waters. Their journey takes them through rocky mountain roads, fishing villages, puddles of water, and a narrow bridge, with delicious stops along the way for ackee and saltfish, naseberries, and sweet mangoes.

Little do Herb and Jen know that a wonderful surprise is waiting for them. Their father will be at Laughing Waters to join them in the fun. It is a joyful family reunion filled with warmth, laughter, and love.

At Laughing Waters, Herb, Jen, and their parents enjoy the cool, fresh water pounding on their backs, the sun, the beach, the fresh air, and sparkling drops of water sprinkling on their faces. It is a special place full of joy, freedom, and wonder.

But there is also a lesson to be learned. When Herb disobeys his father and climbs too far up the falls, he slips down a nearby grass patch and almost hurts himself. Thankfully, Jen comes to his rescue. Through this moment, the story gently teaches children about listening, safety, courage, and caring for one another.

More than a day at the waterfalls, Laughing Waters celebrates the bond between siblings, the love of parents, the joy of shared family experiences, and the deep connectedness children feel when they are free to laugh, explore, and simply be themselves.

Laughing Waters was a special place for Herb and Jen — full of joy, freedom, and wonder. But more than that, it reminds us that every child needs a place like this: a place to laugh, to explore, to just be; a place that becomes part of who they are.

Because when children have a space that lets them be fully themselves, that place stays with them forever.

About the Author

I attended the Froebel College Institute of Education, Roehampton, London, which majors in teaching about the development of the whole child: socially, academically emotionally, physically and spiritually. My early career took me into teaching young children in schools, lecturing, consulting, implementing, and developing stories for a flagship child to child project in rural Jamaica which is integrated into the Jamaican Ministry of Education's curriculum.Although my career has morphed into becoming an International Public Health Consultant, my passion has always been to write children's stories. I am driven by my knowledge of the importance of play for children's development and the gains made by honoring childhood. This story encapsulates memories of my childhood with my brother Herbie, who passed in an accident, and Jen, the author of the story. Our childhood was a happy one filled with fun, laughter, happiness, and pure joy.I exude these emotions intentionally and value giving our children a chance and space to play, have fun and enjoy their childhood years.
