The Children's Crusade was possibly the most extraordinary event in the history of the crusades. The first modern study in English of this popular crusade sheds new light on its history and offers new perspectives on its supposedly dismal outcome. Its richly re-imagined history and mythistory is explored from the thirteenth century to present day.

About the Author:

GARY DICKSON is a Californian who has lived much of his life in Scotland. A graduate of Stanford and Yale, he received his Ph.D. from the University of Edinburgh, where he taught medieval history before becoming an Honorary Fellow. He gave the Wilde Lectures in Natural and Comparative Religion at the University of Oxford and was a Member of the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton. He served on the Editorial Advisory Board of The Crusades: An Encyclopedia.

Review:

“With erudition, Dickson has taken the scattered, fragmentary, and often contradictory evidence for the Children’s Crusade and produced a rich and compelling narrative.  Is it correct?  Dickson is too good a historian to assert that.  The sources simply do not allow it.  One is left, then, with the strong feeling that the fascinating story that Dickson tells may be true.  Or it may not.  And perhaps that is what mythistory is all about.”—Speculum

Book Description Condition: New. Publisher/Verlag: Springer Palgrave Macmillan | Medieval History, Modern Mythistory | The Children's Crusade was possibly the most extraordinary event in the history of the crusades. The first modern study in English of this popular crusade sheds new light on its history and offers new perspectives on its supposedly dismal outcome. Its richly re-imagined history and mythistory is explored from the thirteenth century to present day. | Aroused by crusade processions, French and German peasant youths set out on a quest to find the True Cross and reclaim Jerusalem. Heading south over the Alps and into Italy, their trek was long and arduous. Onlookers watched their march to the sea in amazement. Monastic chroniclers found it both astonishing and troubling. Painting its supposedly catastrophic ending in the blackest of colours, chroniclers were soon gripped by its mythic themes. Through the centuries, imaginative writers never forgot it, and readers of all ages have been intrigued and fascinated by it ever since. From 1212 to the present generation, history, mythistory and memory are put under the spotlight in this fresh, new comprehensive investigation of The Children's Crusade. This, the only full-length modern study in English of The Children's Crusade, offers new perspectives on its history and outcome and is written in an accessible and entertaining style | Introduction (The 60's) PART I: HISTORY The Pope and the Pueri Birthpangs of the Children's Crusade On the Road The Sense of an Ending PART II: MYTHISTORY Mythistorical Motifs (Holy Innocents; Jesus at 12, etc.) Eminent Mythistorians Magic, Prophecy, Apocalypticism PART III: MEMORY Later Medieval and Early Modern Writers The Enlightenment and Romantic Medievalism 19th Century Popular Fiction and Children's Literature 20th Century History and Fiction The Persistence of Social Memory | Format: Paperback | Language/Sprache: english | 320 gr | 216x138x17 mm | 246 pp. Seller Inventory # K9780230248878
