9780230303553: Gender, Youth and Culture: Young Masculinities and Femininities

The question of how boys become men or how girls become women may seem simple, but the answers can be complex. This new edition draws upon rich examples from research, popular media, and global accounts, to explore how gender is produced, consumed, regulated and performed in young lives today.

About the Author:

ANOOP NAYAK is Professor in Social and Cultural Geography at Newcastle University, UK. He is author of the critically acclaimed ethnography Race, Place and Globalisation: Youth Cultures in a Changing World and co-author of Geographical Thought: An Introduction to Thought and Ideas in Human Geography (with Alex Jeffrey).

MARY JANE KEHILY is Professor of Gender and Education at the Open University, UK. She is author of Sexuality, Gender and Schooling and co-author of Making Modern Mothers (with Rachel Thomson, Lucy Hadfield and Sue Sharpe).

Review:

Praise for the second edition:
'A truly international text that reflects a global age of mediatised youth cultures. Accessible, challenging and entertaining – moving fluently between cutting edge theory and vivid ethnographic examples.' - Rachel Thomson, Professor of Childhood and Youth Studies, University of Sussex, UK

'Drawing on new and challenging ideas about embodiment, emotions and agency, this book provides a wonderfully rich source of material, from popular culture to interview data, to explore how we become who we are.' - Beverley Skeggs, Professor of Sociology, Goldsmiths, University of London, UK

Praise for the first edition:
'This is an extremely well-written book: really clear and enjoyable to read...a vital text for undergraduate and postgraduate students of gender or youth studies, but also provides a comprehensive up-to-date compendium of research on gender and youth across the disciplines of sociology, education and geography, for the wider academic community.' - Sumi Hollingworth in Gender and Education

'Gender, Youth and Culture serves as an excellent example of how theoretical insights can be brought together with lived experience. The authors combine intellectually stimulating and challenging discussions with examples from young people's everyday lives. Extracts of conversations by young people are commonly used to illustrate complex theoretical arguments. This does not only mean that the theory becomes more accessible but it actually becomes even more relevant. I have to admit to being impressed by how successfully popular culture characters such as Ally McBeal and Carrie Bradshaw are combined with theorists such as Foucault and Derrida... It is difficult to find something major to criticize in this excellent production.' - Sofia Cele in Geografiska Annaler: Series B, Human Geography

'...a well-researched text about how gender is impacted in our new global, postindustrial society.' - Kerri Kanelos, Feminist Review
