Book Description:

Many of today's most well-regarded writers write their fiction, prose, or poetry in a language that isn't their mother tongue. In a series of lyrical essays, an international selection of writers explore the role that bilingualism has played in their creative lives. Some have struggled against their first or second languages; some use one language for private or emotional expression and another for public, formal presentation. Some reflect on how the cultural possibilities of a second language offer them options they could never have experienced in their first language. Others have struggled with maintaining a coherent sense of self. For many writers, the second, and literary, language has been bound up with personal experiences of exile or colonialism. Taken together, these reflections shed new light on the creative process and on the complex ways that identities are forged in the contemporary, globalized world. Contributors include Anita Desai, Ariel Dorfman, Eva Hoffman, Nuala Ni Dhomnail, Ilan Stavans, and Yoko Tawanda.

Book Description Palgrave MacMillan. Paperback. Book Condition: New. Paperback. 192 pages. Dimensions: 8.4in. x 5.5in. x 0.6in.Being bilingual. What does it mean Living in two languages, between two languages, or in the overlap of two languages What is it like to write in a language that is not the language in which you were raised To create in words other than those of your earliest memories, so far from the words of home and childhood and origin To speak and write in a language other than the one which you once believed held the seamless connection between words and things Do you constantly translate yourself, constantly switch, shift, alternate, not just vocabulary and syntax but consciousness and feelings In a series of original essays, writers reflect on questions of identity, of choice, and of the difficult search for self and place. Products of the post-war global realities in which they have matured, they interrogate the individual, they explore the intimate experience, they ponder the strange itineraries that have led them from a childhood in one language to a writing life in another.
