Uncertain Years is a collection of papers and summaries of related conferenee discussions by scholars in the fields of both American and Chinese foreign policy. It probes from various perspectives the failure of the United States and the Chinese Communists to reach an accommodation in the period immediately following World War II. Did the American government intend to normalize its relations with the People's Republic of China until the Korean War intervened? Or was the Truman administration in fact stepping up the cold war in Asia, making long years of hostility virtually inevitable? Were the Chinese Communists attempting to establish diplomatic relations with the American government and, if so, did the attitude of Washington prevent it? Uncertain Years also examines other issues of central concern. In particular it considers the vital role of the Chinese Nationalists' relations with the United States in the events from 1947 to 1950. Important newly available archival materials are used throughout. The eonference on Chinese~American relations between 1947 and 1950 was held in 1978. It was attended by some two dozen historians and political scientists. The summaries of the conference included in this volume reflect important differenees of opinion which add a vital dimension to the papers. In addition Waldo Heinrichs provides a cogent overview of this crucial, problematical period in Chinese~American relations. Seller Inventory # 12291505
