The 10th edition of this anthologized English-language poetry reference indexes by last line, to facilitate the ease of search. The index features 150 new anthology listings, a revised index of 12,500 last lines, and a subject index of over 3400 categories.

This new edition of Granger's will be as welcome in virtually all types of libraries as older editions. As in the past, the editors dropped some 150 anthologies covered in the ninth edition to add another 150 to this one, making retention of older editions a necessity. The preface indicates that 79,000 poems by 11,000 authors are indexed (21,000 new poems and 900 new authors) within 386 anthologies.
The major enhancement to this edition of Granger's is the addition of last-line indexing for 12,500 poems. This feature is integrated within the main section of the work, now called "Title, First Line, and Last Line Index." The basic look of the work remains unchanged, though last lines are indicated with "(LL)" at the end of the line. Following this (as is the case with first lines) is the title of the poem, the poet, and the usual abbreviations of anthologies where the poem may be found. This enhancement perhaps comes as a result of the publication of Virginia Kline's Last Lines [RBB Ja 15 92], a Granger's look-alike published by Facts On File that indexed everything in the eighth edition of Granger's plus more. Although the 12,500 last lines indexed by Granger's can hardly compare with the 171,000 indexed by Last Lines, this feature is nevertheless a welcome addition. As to the selection of which poems to index by last line, the editors note that they are the "poems that have been anthologized most frequently. These are the poems reprinted most often, circulated most often, most likely to be present on library shelves, and therefore most likely to be remembered and searched for."
Although there will always be questions concerning why certain anthologies were dropped from Granger's, the Board was particularly struck by the fact that many anthologies of translations of foreign poetry--something Granger's did for the first time in the ninth edition--were dropped from the tenth. Of the 58 foreign anthologies in the ninth edition, 47 were dropped. Fewer were added with this edition, so the tenth edition has only 29 foreign anthologies--half as many as in the ninth.
Most libraries will find the tenth edition of Granger's virtually indispensable as an addition to their reference collections. Columbia plans to release an updated version of The Columbia Granger's World of Poetry on CD-ROM [RBB Mr 1 92] in the spring of 1995, so libraries that have already invested in that work may want to upgrade their CD-ROM rather than making an investment of almost $200 for the printed work. From Library Journal:
The tenth edition of The Columbia Granger's Index to Poetry contains many improvements over the ninth edition (1990), the most significant being the introduction of last lines. In addition to the standard first lines and titles, over 12,000 last lines are included in the single alphabetical index. The work is further enhanced by the addition of 150 new anthologies, making the total number of anthologies indexed over 400. With these new changes, Granger's place as the seminal reference work in poetry indexing is not just assured but elevated. Once again, titles like Last Lines (Facts on File, 1991) can be viewed only as supplementary to Granger's. While this work belongs in all libraries and is highly recommended, smaller libraries that own the ninth edition and Last Lines can feel safe in not updating at this time. All academic libraries and larger public libraries should own the new edition of Granger's.
