Since 1846 when Margaret Fuller became the first woman to write regularly for a daily U.S. newspaper, women have made significant, but oftentimes unrecognized, contributions to American journalism. Belford not only gives us the fascinating profiles of these newspaper writers over the past 140 years, but includes samples of their work as well. She examines the personal lives, careers, and writings of such notable "bygone bylines" as "Nellie Bly" (Elizabeth Cochrane Seaman) and "Dorothy Dix" (Elizabeth Meriwether Gilmer) and those of such modern luminaries as Marguerite Higgins, Georgie Anne Geyer, and Ellen Goodman. Belford's biographical anthology traces the development of the American newspaperwoman and in the process reveals much about the history of U.S. journalism itself.
