9780231058797: American Myth and the Legacy of Vietnam

Probing the effect of the Vietnam War on the American self-image, the author uses popular culture, literature, and film to study how the myths and symbols of the war reflected the politics of Americans.

From Library Journal:

Hellman thoughtfully examines the significance of the values and symbols propagated in the memoirs, novels, and films dealing with Vietnam in the years 1955-80, and how these related to America's fundamental national myths. Among the works he considers are The Ugly American, the antiwar writings of Norman Mailer and Susan Sontag, the novels of military veterans like James Webb and Tim O'Brien, and films such as Apocalypse Now . Cogently and critically, Hellmann contends that the most important contribution of these works has been to "explore the war as a symbolic landscape inverting America's frontier ethos." Americans lost more than a war in Vietnam, he suggests. They lost the core myths that define the country's very sense of itself. And the country will not regain any semblance of national unity or purpose until those myths have been repaired or replaced. A serious work, this will be of interest to scholars and others interested in the war. Charles DeBenedetti, History Dept., Univ. of Toledo, Ohio
