Dissects Kissinger's complex, often controversial political career, examining the triumphs and blunders of his "shuttle diplomacy," the negotiations to normalize relations with China, and other foreign policy decisions

More than ten years out of office, the career of Henry "Super K" Kissinger continues to intrigue. Most libraries will own his memoirs, White House Years ( LJ 12/1/79) and Years of Upheaval ( LJ 6/1/82), and should offer at least a sampling of analyses ranging from Bernard and Marvin Kalb's complimentary Kissinger ( LJ 8/74) to Seymour Hersh's critical The Price of Power ( LJ 8/83). In this newest critique of Kissinger's overall record, Schulzinger (history, Univ. of Colorado) benefits from the perspective of time and newly available papers of Kissinger and Presidents Ford and Nixon and has crafted a balanced, well- documented, and highly readable analysis, covering Kissinger's towering ego and grand failures as well as his noted brilliance and stunning foreign policy successes. A similar, but more detailed, treatment than Seymon Brown's The Crisis of Power ( LJ 12/1/79), this is recommended for most libraries.

As both Secretary of State and National Security Advisor in the Nixon and Ford administrations, Kissinger played a vital role in ending U.S. involvement in Southeast Asia, the commencement of detente with the Soviet Union, the opening of relations with China and in bringing the U.S. into the Middle East arena as a major player. In an important, well-balanced analysis, based in part on newly declassified data, Schulzinger tracks Kissinger's career. Although Kissinger's accomplishments are given full due, Schulzinger, history professor at the University of Colorado, emphasizes the gap between promise and fulfillment, showing, for instance, that Kissinger "oversold" detente with the Soviet Union. He also explores Kissinger's "indifference to legal requirements" in his role in the secret bombing of Cambodia and the 1970 invasion of that country, the 1972 Christmas bombing of North Vietnam, and the 1970-1973 efforts to destabilize the Allende government in Chile.
