JAMES LULL is Professor Emeritus of Communication Studies at San Jose State University and author or editor of a dozen books on media, communication, and culture including the forthcoming The Language of Life: How Communication Drives Human Evolution.
STEPHEN HINERMAN is lecturer in communication studies at San Jose State University.
