Reviews

Grade 6 Up An introduction to popular Hindu mythology which offers a very different world-view to Western readers. The foreword by Prabhu Guptara explains in simple, deliberate language the importance of storytelling in his childhood. The stories are retold with grace, intelligence, and wit. They are not stripped of their uniqueness to make them universal. Yet, it is a delight to discover parallels with our own ``value'' stories. In these 12 tales, good and evil, beauty and ugliness, creation and destruction contend in the fabulous personification of gods, goddesses, and demons. The characteristics of human nature are played out and merge with natural landscapes. Men and worlds die to be born anew. These tales entertain as well as teach. The full-color cover illustration and the spare black-and-white drawings scattered throughout are excellent accompaniments. Unfortunately, the book's textbook appearance and the didactic foreword would indicate a younger readership than the text requires. Libby K. White, Schenectady County Public Library, N.Y.
