Waking up in a bad mood, Emily imitates the angry movements of several animals until she meets a frog who jumps for joy.

PreSchool-Grade 2-- Emily, a freckle-faced, pear-shaped child with spiky hair, a piggy nose, and a sour expression, wakes up inexplicably furious one morning. Trying to vent her rage, she consults various animals about how they express their anger and copies them. She hisses like the cat, flaps and screams like the seagull, snorts and paws the ground like the bull, and so on, but nothing seems to help. Finally a frog shows her how to jump out her frustrations until she ends up jumping for joy. This works, and she goes home to breakfast. The lively, full-page, cartoon-style watercolors are bright and funny as they show the cranky little girl wholeheartedly imitating each angry creature. Preschoolers will enjoy hearing and participating in the story, and the text is simple enough for beginning readers. Only the weaker examples of animals such as the spider, the hedgehog, the mouse, and the rabbit, detract from the book's impact. --Patricia Pearl, First Presbyterian School, Martinsville, VA
