In her first novel, Alexander uses as background the ten years she and her husband spent as wildlife wardens on Skomer Island, a wildlife refuge off the Welsh coast, to give us a very readable story. She also teaches us about the dangers faced by a seal she calls Selkie in the first year of his life. Within the first few days after the seal's birth, the wildlife population on Skomer encounters an oil slick. Some seabirds and seal pups die. A late autumn storm washes other pups off the island. Once his mother leaves him, Selkie must learn to fend for himself, and instinct leads him to fish. He sees other young seals die when they become entangled in old fishing debris. Selkie encounters humans twice; once on the island, when they save his life, the other on the Welsh coast, when he is too trusting and is injured. This well-written novel should be enjoyed by young people as well as adults. Recommended for general collections.
