Agateware is a multihued ceramic in which colors are achieved with colored clay rather than the application of surface glazes. Making finished items can be difficult because the clays may not shrink equally during firing, causing the piece to fall apart. De Reilhan, a French artist who has mastered the technique, presents instructions for agateware molding and firing with many variations, including marbling, geometric patterns, feathering, checkerboard effects, and inlay. Excellent color photographs throughout show materials, work in progress, and finished pieces.
