Grade 5 Up Bradman occasionally succumbs to the use of irony in describing Lennon's life and death, but he generally maintains a matter-of-fact tone in this brief biography. Unlike Martin's recent John Lennon/Julian Lennon (Avon, 1986), there isn't much analysis of the Beatles' music here; on the other hand (also unlike Martin), Bradman does make it clear that Lennon experimented with drugs, including heroin, and wrote some undeniably odd songs. The discography does not include dates. Illustrations, which seem to have been drawn from publicity photos, are acceptably clear, although sparse. Recommended for collections with older but less able readers. John Peters, New York Public Library
