Henry Morley's classic is here presented afresh in its original edition of 1859. This is a work of immense stature set firmly upon diligent research yet filled with lively commentary and glorious word pictures. From the fair's beginnings 850 years ago in the priory churchyard of St Bartholomew it grew to be England's chief cloth fair. Its story is a startling incursion into social history at once hideous and hilarious, volatile and peaceable and in the rough and tumble of jugglers, horse dealers, minstrels and cheapjacks astonishingly alive. A market of illusions as much as of comestibles and cloth, it was also at Bartholomew Fair that the first miracle plays were performed, with a juggler as impresario. Later, with the paving over of the smooth field (or Smithfield) and buildings going up, the character of the fair altered, trading declined and itinerant showmen with their menageries, theatrical booths, freak shows and primitive roundabouts gradually established themselves. In its more familiar form it continued to flourish in spite of increasing efforts to suppress it on the part of those who feared its moral pollution until, in 1855, the death blow came in the form of inflated tolls. Morley's first history remains the most authoritative and most enjoyable. Seller Inventory # 004601
