Excerpt from The American Journal of Psychology, 1887, Vol. 1
Of the many names which have been given to this phenomenon, viz.: knee phenomenon, patellar tendon reflex, myotatic contraction, knee-kick, knee-jerk, the last has commended itself to the writer, because it calls attention to the peculiar sud denness of the movement, and does not imply any thing with regard to the nature of the process.
The author takes this opportunity to express his thanks to Prof. H. Newell Martin and Professor G. Stanley Hall, for their valuable advice and their great courtesy. He takes pleasure, also, in acknowl edging his indebtedness to his cc-worker in this research. All the experiments were made upon the writer by his wife, and their value is greatly enhanced by the accuracy and care with which her work was done.

This book delves into the fascinating world of the knee-jerk reflex, a phenomenon that has captivated the minds of scientists and medical professionals for centuries. The author takes a meticulous and scientific approach, examining the variations in knee-jerk responses through a series of detailed experiments conducted on himself. These experiments, conducted in the late 19th century, were groundbreaking in their use of sophisticated apparatus to measure and record the precise movements of the leg. The author investigates the interplay between the central nervous system and the knee-jerk reflex, exploring how various external and internal factors can affect its strength and consistency. These factors include fatigue, hunger, emotional states, and even the influence of music on the reflex. The book delves into the broader implications of this research for understanding the complex workings of the human body, particularly the delicate balance of the nervous system. It offers insights into the intricate connection between physical and mental states, suggesting that the seemingly simple knee-jerk reflex is a powerful indicator of the body's overall condition. The author's findings are sure to captivate readers interested in the history of scientific inquiry and the ongoing quest to unravel the mysteries of the human mind and body.
