From Library Journal:

This first work in a new series pictures New York as the dominant center during the period when the nation's modern sports emerged. The author concentrates on racing, baseball, track and field, and boxing, with less notice given to "leisure sports." His work is similar to but narrower in focus than Benjamin D. Rader's American Sports ( LJ 4/1/83). (Rader is an editor of the new series.) Using occupational profiles, Adelman weighs the earlier elitist tradition in sports versus the rising egalitarian influence and the emerging professionalism and commercialization. Though the book is interesting and easy reading, the scope will make it most valuable in research collections. Morey Berger, Monmouth Cty. Lib., Freehold, N.J.
