Joan W. Scott est historienne, membre depuis 1985 de l Institute for Advanced Study de Princeton (School of Social Science). Elle est l auteur d ouvrages et d articles qui ont profondement transforme l approche historique en mettant l accent notamment sur la question du genre, mais aussi sur l historicite des identites, le rapport entre le langage et le reel, les relations entre science et politique, la tradition de la pensee critique ("La Citoyenne paradoxale. Les feministes francaises et les droits de l homme", Albin Michel, 1998). Ses derniers ouvrages insistent sur la tension entre l universalisme republicain et l affirmation des differences ("Parite !
