In this bold and imaginative study, a young critic formulates a new theory of tragedy, defining it in terms of content ("a hard core of Negative Capacity, a Thing Contained") rather than by surface characteristics of the form. His definition - tragedy is consummated when the dream of innocence is confronted by the fact of guilt, and acquiesces therein - is propounded with skill and vigor, with references ranging throughout the history of literature and criticism - from Spencer to Schopenhauer, from Nietzsche to Murray Kreiger. He persuasively defends the view that the tragic is identifiable with the "irrational, demonic, and Dionysian," though it appears under the "Apollonian overlay" of dramatic form.
