Allora le piante acquatiche si accaval lano sul fiume; tutta una flora palustre invade lentissimamente la superficie, nella quale gli alberi si specchiano in pendula corona; generazioni di piante vive si sovrappongono ad altre generazioni spente, nella malinconia fatale di quell' acqua deserta senza una barca; quell'acqua morta, stagnante, sepolcrale, oppressa da uno spasimo muto, a cui fanno corona le bianche ninfee e i cespi di rose canine.
