Synopsis

This book is a collection of 46 lessons in reading, ranging from simple to challenging, selected by the author from a 4th grade reader originally published in 1857. The author added large additions from other sources to create this meticulously organized body of work. Designed for children between 9 and 12 years of age, the book can be used for instruction in lower grammar school grades or for independent reading by children of appropriate age. Each lesson is accompanied by a list of the words within it and their pronunciations, and the book includes an extensive introduction containing articulation exercises, pronunciation instruction, and an explanation of the system of orthographic spelling used throughout the book. The author includes direction for the teacher in the introduction, recommending that each reading lesson be preceded by exercises in vocal development and pronunciation clarity. The introduction also includes instruction on the proper use of emphasis and inflection.
