As 1967 ended, Marines - more than one-fourth of the approximately 300, 000-man Corps - were in combat in Viet nam with the Third Marine Amphibious Force (iii maf). Operating primarily in I Corps (the five northern-most provinces of South Vietnam), the Marine Air Ground Team repelled several invasions across the Demilitarized Zone (dmz) by units of the North Vietnamese Army.
