Synopsis

This book is a treatise on the correct speaking of the English language. The author felt that despite the difficulty in mastering English pronunciation, it should be possible for anyone, including foreigners, to achieve if they followed the proper methods. The book begins with a discussion of the English language as compared to other languages. It then provides an intricate explanation of the sounds of which English speech is composed, describing the positions of the mouth and other organs used to create those sounds. The book then explains how those sounds combine to create words, and offers an abundance of exercises for the reader to practice. The author believed that a more thorough understanding of English would help people to better understand and appreciate the historical context and ideas expressed in the language's literature. Indeed, the author argued that a lack of understanding of English pronunciation posed a barrier to a deeper comprehension of the language as a whole. By clarifying pronunciation and offering methods to achieve, the author hoped to remove this barrier and open up a fuller appreciation of English.
