Doreen Kimura provides an intelligible overview of what is known about the neural and hormonal bases of sex differences in behavior, particularly differences in cognitive ability.

In this fact-driven book, Doreen Kimura provides an intelligible overview of what is known about the neural and hormonal bases of sex differences in behavior, particularly differences in cognitive ability. Kimura argues that women and men differ not only in physical attributes and reproductive function, but also in how they solve common problems. She offers evidence that the effects of sex hormones on brain organization occur so early in life that, from the start, the environment is acting on differently wired brains in girls and boys. She presents various behavioral, neurological, and endocrinological studies that shed light on the processes giving rise to these sex differences in the brain.

About the Author:

Doreen Kimura is Professor of Psychology at Simon Fraser University. She is the author of Neuromotor Mechanisms in Human Communication and has written on sex and cognition for publications such as Scientific American.

Review:

Written by a respected scientist, this book provides an extremely readable and engaging discussion of contemporary research on the nature and significance of sex differences in cognitive abilities, and the ways in which biological factors contribute to the differences between and within sexes. Professor Kimura brings light to a topic that generates a lot of heat. Her creative and thoughtful research shows how science can help us to understand an important social issue. This book should be read by anyone with a serious interest in understanding what makes males and females different.

Sheri Berenbaum, Professor of Behavioral & Social Sciences, Southern Illinois Univeristy School of Medicine, Carbondale (Endorsement)

Sex and Cognitive is a highly readable overview of what we know about sex differences in cognition. Kimura gives us an informative book that is free from the biases, cliches, and half-truths found in many popular descriptions of sex and the brain―without sacrificing the intrigue of the basic question.

Bryan Kolb, Professor of Psychology and Neuroscience, University of Lethbridge (Endorsement)

Dr. Kimura provides an excellent and unusally lucid review of discoveries on sex differences in the brain and behavior, to which she has made seminal contributions, and a refreshing scientific defense of open scientific consideration of the causes of these differences.

Jerre Levy, Department of Psychology, University of Chicago (Endorsement)

This is a comprehensive, erudite, and highly readable review of theory and data on cognitive sex differences by one of the world's foremost contributors to the topic. It can be appreciated by educated laypersons and students at every level, as well as by specialists in the field.

Irwin Silverman, Professor of Psychology, York University, Canada (Endorsement)

This is a terrific and long overdue book! 'Sex and Cognition' is the definitve summary of what is known (and just as important - what is not known) about the often controversial connections among human biology, brain, cognition, and sexual development.

Brian A. Gladue, Research Professor of Psychology and Research Facilitator, Institute for Health Policy and Health Services Research, University of Cinncinnati Medical Center (Endorsement)

Kimura provides an authoritative overview of the field of sex differences in cognition, moving from hormones to cognition, genes to behavior, in a calm and clear way. This book will be a valuable resource for students and teachers of cognitive science.

Simon Baron-Cohen, Departments of Experimental Psychologyand Psychiatry, University of Cambridge, UK (Endorsement)
