KOLBE'S GREATEST BOOKS are indispensable components of liberal education because liberal education—unlike training and schooling—culminates in wisdom. The Greatest Books are a treasury of accumulated wisdom drawn from the riches of Judeo-Christian Civilization and from men and women of good will representing the natural law tradition to the modern world. They are called “greatest” because of the formative impact they have had as a tour de force of our civilization, because they masterfully deal with the greatest questions the human mind is capable of thinking about and because they are central to the education of free human being. Here in 101 color coded volumes are the writings of eminent statesmen, philosophers, poets, saints, and scientists, the greatest thinkers and exemplars of humankind; men and women dedicated to the development, penetration, and diffusion of ideas that have shaped the legal, ethical, moral, and spiritual codes, which are the bedrock of our civilization. BROWN - MATH & SCIENCE GREEN - LITERATURE BLUE - POLITICS, HISTORY, LAW BLACK - PHILOSOPHY PURPLE - THEOLOGY RED - SPIRITUAL CLASSICS THESE ARE THE "GREATEST BOOKS" NOT THE "GREAT BOOKS" "The Great Books of the Western World" are a well known edition of great writings compiled and edited by Robert Hutchins and Mortimer J. Adler. This well known series contains many of the greatest adversaries of Christian civilization. Unlike Kolbe's Greatest Books, which are all part of the Judeo-Christian, Greco-Roman natural law tradition, the Great Books are often antithetical to this tradition. Consider that the Great Books include such avowed enemies of Christianity as Marx, Hegel, Freud, Darwin, Machiavelli, and Rousseau, (among a host of others) atheists, deists, agnostics, anti-Christians, and revolutionaries. They include an additional series of 102 "Recommended Readings" in which we find such enemies of the faith as Ivan Pavlov, the father of classical conditioning , Sir James Frazier who endeavors to reduce Christianity to a human construct and Christ to the level of mythology, Herbert Spencer, a social evolutionist and cultural determinist, the agnostic Thomas Huxley, and others such as the deist Thomas Paine who along with Voltaire wage ceaseless war against Christianity. According to Paine, the Christian system of faith, is "A species of Atheism — a sort of religious denial of God. It professes to believe in a man rather than in God. It is a compound made up chiefly of Manism with but little Deism, and is as near to Atheism as twilight is to darkness". Voltaire signed his letters écrasez l’infâme, which means to "crush the wretch" by whom he meant the Catholic Church. He made her destruction the center of all his efforts. Statesmen and philosophers should focus all their efforts on destroying its infamous missionaries; they should be willing to "risk all things, even to be burned in order to destroy it. Let us crush the wretch! Crush the wretch! Écrasez l’infâme! Is it a good thing to turn out immature and underdeveloped minds to pasture in fields occupied by such men? We should endeavor to better than this! It seems the height of human folly to leave young Christian students alone to discover truth in this pastiche of bewildering thinkers unaided by their own venerable intellectual tradition, which touches on every great idea in every domain of human endeavor by masters of both secular and sacred thought that are available to them in The Greatest Books and by master teachers who know these books, the truths they contain and the arguments arrayed against them from opposing camps represented in the Great Books. In short, The Greatest Books of Christian Civilization are not necessarily the "Great Books of Western Civilization", which are often arrayed against them.
