This book is a systematic survey of our knowledge of the theory of close binary systems, including a presentation of modern methods for the analysis of light changes of eclipsing variables. It serves to exhibit some conclusions concerning the general physical characteristics and evolutionary trends in such binaries as have transpired from available observed data. The book discusses the discovery of close binary systems, dating back to the work of Michell in 1767, placing it within the context of the scientific thought of the time. The author then goes on to provide an exposition and critique of theoretical methods for determining the elements of eclipsing binary systems, and to discuss physical properties of such systems, which in turn allows the author to make some assessment of the origin and evolution of close binary systems. The book concludes by considering what conclusions can be drawn about the general population of close binary systems in our galaxy.
