Je' ne puis qu'effleurer ce sujet; toutefois, grâce aux faits que je viens d'indiquer 'a la hâte et au hasard dela plume, il ne sera pas difficile de découvrir, d'une façon assez inattendue, l'origine des religions, aussi bien de la religion révélée que de la religion natu relle. Mais mon avant-propos est déjà trop long et je ne puis retarder davantage le récit de notre voyageur. Je ne passerai donc pas en revue les textes qu'il conviendrait de consulter sur ces sujets et, à mon vif regret, je me vois dans l'obligation d'abandonner cette étude si intéressante, non toutefois sans garder l'espoir de la reprendre quelque jour. En effet, une personne digne de confiance et d'un grand bon sens m'a laissé espérer qu'elle me fournirait de curieuses observations qu'elle a faites en pleine Afrique, dans les parties les moins connues de ce continent, et où elle a constaté que les indigènes, qui n'ont pas été corrompus par le contact des Européens, sont humains, exempts de malice, et mènent une conduite conforme à la morale, confirmant ce que notre auteur raconte au sujet des Malgaches.
