From that time to the present the claim has repeatedly been made that we should read ancient Greek literature by giving to the letters the value which they have in Modern Greek. That the modern pronunciation differs exceedingly from the ancient is a fact capable of the clearest historical demonstration, and as early as 1528 the great scholar Erasmus maintained that it was necessary to deter mine historically what the ancient pronunciation was, and to be guided in our practice by the results of such investigation.
