Excerpt from History of Bowdoin College: With Biographical Sketches of Its Graduates, From 1806 to 1879, Inclusive
The birthplace of graduates as given in the history cannot be entirely depended upon, inasmuch as the record of admissions, until quite recently, gives sometimes residence and not the place of birth. The main interest and value of this work, its conception, and whatever of felicity appears in its execution, are to be accredited to Mr. Cleaveland, whose taste and skill with a delicate humor have been conspicuous in other publications. The writer has been conversant from the first with the progress of the work in the hands of his college friend, and has been his correspondent to the close.
