Excerpt from The Duchess of Berry: And the Revolution of 1830

According to an ancient usage, a deputation from the towns of Pontoise and Beauvais were admitted to present a sheep to the sovereign. The court jewel lers displayed to him the trinkets and articles of silver plate offered as gifts to the Dauphiness, the Duchess of Berry, the Duke of Bordeaux, and Mademoiselle. M. Giroux offered him various New Year's presents from the Children of France. The gardeners of the royal gardens presented the fruits of their industry, and the chief huntsmen the products of the chase.

On January 5, there was a family dinner at the Tuileries. The Twelfth-night cake was cut, and the bean fell to the Duke of Bordeaux. Who was chosen as queen by the little Prince? Madame the Duchess of Orleans. He did not suspect that she would be queen in reality before the year was out.
