9780273641988: Sex and Business: Ethics of Sexuality in Business and the Workplace

The original Hite Report became a legend that transformed our views on sexual behavior in society. Yet every day, we enter a place where no-one knows what the sexual rules are. A place where we spend more time, with more people of the opposite sex than in any other part of our lives. The workplace.Applying the revolutionary thinking of the original reports, combined with groundbreaking new research, Sex and Business writes the rules for how men and women can work together to create a new and vital force for success. Above all, it addresses the questions and dilemmas that almost every one of us has faced:What are your motives at work - can you be who you really are? How do you gain respect at work without conforming to tired male and female cliches? Can colleagues of the opposite sex be friends without everyone assuming there's something 'going on' between them? What if they are genuinely attracted to each other? Or even fall in love? Is this really a problem for the company? Where does friendliness stop and sexual harassment begin? People are the fundamental units of any business. Sex & Business releases the dynamic energy that men and women, working together, bring to the company. It offers you the opportunity to redesign your mental software, and pioneer a new workscape. You will find this book changes your life - immediately and profoundly. Read it. Don't miss it. Working will never be the sameNo other book raises the Crucial new issues hidden inside today's offices. No other book delves into the psyches of men and women caught in the web of sexual intrigue, harassment and sexual bullying. No other book delivers such innovative and decisive solutions for the new workscape. Be friendly, don't be friendly, flirt, never flirt, don't take it seriously, go out for coffee, don't go out for coffee... confused? You're not alone. This groundbreaking book provides an insight into business like no other. The voices of hundreds of real people here reveal their deepest thoughts about who they work with and how they feel. Women reveal how they feel working with men; men reveal how they honestly feel about working with women; women talk about how they find working for and with other women; famous CEOs examine how they see the new world of work relationships developing inside their companies ... and themselves. In Sex & Business, internationally renowned gender specialist, Dr Shere Hite, leads you through the minefield of sexual politics and exposes the areas where misunderstanding and problems arise. True to the Hite Research tradition, the book also offers a mini-Hite Report: a set of statistics on topics never before analyzed, relating to men and women 's feelings about their situation at work.Software To Delete I grew up to believe work and business would be an all-male environment, and that women do not belong there.Software To Install Men and women working together is normal today, and offers new energy and vitality. I like it. The AuthorShere Hite, is an internationally celebrated thinker on human relationships and sexual behavior. Preface: A New Emotional LandscapeUnderwater Frescoes of the MindSome say "human nature" is a fixed phenomenon, that a new psychological-emotional landscape cannot be possible. They point to the Athenian playwright Sophocles, or to Shakespeare, saying that their plays prove that "human nature has always been the same; civilizations have always been the same, humans love, hate, are jealous, greedy and fear each other ..."Yet isn't this merely lazy justification of the status quo? Think of the antique (pre-6th-century) Greek myths and how hard it is for us to understand some of the myths' stories in their original form. The archaeologist Marija Gimbutas has proposed a worldview for this period, pre-history, that is quite different from the standard view "real history starts with the Greeks and Egyptians"—a history that extends 20,000 years further into the past with a complex, sophisticated and lively artistic tradition—and most probably a different psychological and emotional landscape.A new emotional landscape is possible, even if one never existed before. How can we make a new psychological-emotional landscape?People often prefer to claim that they have no myths, that myths are for "stupid" or "primitive" people. Yet underlying the social system studied by sociologists, and the emotions studied by psychologist, lie myths of creation, myths of family and myths of heroic beahviour. These archetypes, currently unacknowledged or called "instinct", for the backdrop of or psyches and beliefs. At present, the myths are undergoing change, a new psychological landscape is struggling to come into existence. In order for this to happen, and to take part in defining the new landscape, it is important to understand these myths.Slowly, my work has been endeavouring to discover the identity of some of these underwater "unconscious" frescoes in our minds—the backdrop to our psyches and emotions. As a result of my research, I believe that a completely different emotional-psychological landscape is now trying to emerge. Part of our psychology has been resistant to change because a hidden layer in the psyche, an identity behind our psychologies (often mistakenly called "human nature") has not been analyzed. Uncovering this buried underwater layer is one of the goals of my work. This hidden layer is composed of all the myths and stories that create the human emotional spectrum as we know it. This is the terrain we meet when we are born, that we learn to take as "inevitably" our own.Naming this terrain will allow a new landscape to emerge.
