L'on m'a conseillé de ne pas introduire trop d'idées mystiques dans ces tableaux. Je ne m'y serais certes pas hasardée, parce que la vie mystique est renfermée dans un livre à sept sceaux, que peuvent seulement ouvrir les saints et ceux que Dieu inspire, tandis que moi, je suis à peine parvenue au seuil de la sainte Eglise catholique. Cependant, il ne fallait pas reculer devant la publication les oeuvres de la puissance et de l'amour de Dieu dans ses créatures purifiées par les exercices spirituels, parce qu'elles forment une partie considérable de la vie des grands anachorètes, et qu'on ne saurait ainsi ne pas y admirer les grands secrets du mysticisme. Nous nous en sommes rapportée au saint ermite, au grand Jean Climaque, lorsque, dans son Echelle du ciel il écrit avec une si aimable simplicité: là où Dieu, qui est au-dessus de la nature, 0père, il surgira toujours beaucoup d'oeuvres, qui seront également au - dessus de la nature.
