Peter Haining is the editor of more than 100 anthologies, including The Wizards' Den.
Grade 6 Up-A highly uneven collection. On the one hand, the editor is to be commended for including classic authors such as Charles Dickens, H. G. Wells, and George MacDonald. The trouble is that most of the stories here are excerpted from longer works and are less effective when taken out of context. To his credit, Haining provides a brief paragraph or two that sets the stage for each story, and provides some information about the author at the conclusion of the tale. The problem lies in the selection of some of the tales themselves. Readers would be better off reading Roald Dahl's The Witches and Philip Pullman's Count Karlstein in their entirety rather than the excerpts presented here. This is not to say that there are not some gems. A hilarious piece by L. Frank Baum called "The Magic Bonbons," in which a girl procures magic candies to make her become a Broadway star and then misplaces them, is a real discovery. There is also a humorous "Earthsea" story by Ursula K. Le Guin and a very odd story based on the Charon myth of ancient Egypt from Alan Garner, but beyond that there is little to recommend this collection. This is an additional purchase where The Wizards' Den (Souvenir, 2003) has been popular, or where the appetite for fantasy stories cannot be satisfied.
