The catalogue and exhibition offer an opportunity to assess the development of photography from the vantage point of the present. Senior Curator Chris Bruce, working closely with Joseph Monsen, established six broad categories of photographic activity that describe the terrain of contemporary photography. With these groupings as a foundation, additional photographs were selected from the nineteenth century to the recent past which might be seen as antecedents to contemporary work (for example comparing Thomas Ruff's photographs of 1986-88 with August Sander's typological studies of 1912), or which would allow consideration of the impact of photography on the tradition of portraiture, as in the work of Hill and Adamson in the 1840s and Arnulf Rainer in the late 1960s. The resulting survey reveals the extraordinary development of an art form within the last 150 years, yielding insights into the evolution of photography as art and drawing our attention to individual photographs which achieve the highest level of beauty and creative intelligence.
