About the Author:

Colleen J. McElroy is a professor of English and Creative Writing at the University of Washington in Seattle, Washington. Winner of the Before Columbus American Book Award, McElroy has published six books of poetry, two collections of short stories, and a textbook on speech and language development. She has received numerous grants and awards for her work as a writer and scholar.

Colleen McElroy's poems, stories, and articles have appeared in many magazines and journals, including Ploughshares, Seattle Review, Prairie Schooner, Short Story International, Essence, Choice, Missouri Review, Fine Madness etc. Her fiction and poetry have been included frequently in both trade and academic press anthologies, among them two Pushcart Prize collections. She has received a National Endowment of the Arts Fellowship, a Rockefeller Foundation Fellowship, and a Fulbright Fellowship.

McElroy's most recently published fiction was a collection of short stories titled Driving Under The Cardboard Pines (Creative Arts Books: Berkeley, 1990); be fore that, she had published her first collection of stories, Jesus and Fat Tuesday (Creative Arts Books: Berkeley, 1988). McElroy's most recently published book of poems was a collection titled What Madness Brought Me Here (Wesleyan Poetry Series, 1988), and Travelling Music (Story Line Press, 1998).

In 1993 McElroy traveled to Madagascar on a Fulbright Fellowship to observe the storytellers of that country. A description of the journey, a book to include a collection of Malagasy stories, titled Over The Lip Of The World: The Storytellers of Madagascar, will be published by the University of Washington Press.

McElroy lives in Seattle and is currently working on a novel, teaching, and planning her next journey.
