"One million people have left this big punishment cell-the Soviet Union-where the KGB had been looking in. And the regime doesn't even exist anymore! I realized it then, [upon returning to Lefortovo Prison in 1997], how much we had all survived, and how in the end this cell was the scene of my greatest victory." (As quoted in an article by David Remnick, The New Yorker, August 1997.)
Natan Sharansky lives in Israel, where he is a leader of Israel B'aliyah, the party of the new Russian immigrants, and minister of industry and trade in Netanyahu's cabinet.
