Concern with the land was one of the dominant motifs of the New Deal era. During this time, landscape architects assumed a crucial role in the events that mobilized the nation's unemployed, as they administered, supervised, and designed projects for the National Emergency Works Program. The landscape architects presided over a startling transformation of the public landscape, in league with architects and engineers they produced Timberline Lodge, the Blue Ridge Parkway, the San Antonio canal system, the San Francisco Zoo, and The TVA's initial nine lakes and dams. In addition, they were responsible for the creation of numerous other projects: two continental foot trails, a nationwide shelterbelt, 99 new communities, more than 8,000 town parks, some 12,800 playgrounds, and thousands of forest shelters and campgrounds. This is the first book to examine the Depression years from the perspective of its landscape architecture. Phoebe Cutler provides a comprehensive and lively history of the diverse landscape projects sponsored by Roosevelt's New Deal, relating them to the economic and social context of those years, to FDR's political style, and to changing cultural and design fashions during that period. Cutler's descriptions of the New Deal land programs -- testimony to an unparalleled cooperation between government, craftsman, conservationist, and designer -- invoke the romanticism and moral pragmatism of a unique time in our history. In addition, her vivid account of the creation of these "artifacts of hard times" provides fresh insights into the rise of the profession of landscape architecture.
