Synopsis

In the eyes of scholars of history and jurisprudence, F.W. Maitland (1850-1906) is among the very greatest of English historians. However, little has been written about him. G.R. Elton, one of the first-rank historians of his own generation, now remedies this omission with a skilled, succinct, and vigorous essay that is both biography and critique.

Reviews

Maitland (1850-1906) set out to be a lawyer; he drifted to the study of history almost by accident and only wrote history in the last 22 years of his life. Yet, he above all others set the standards of historical scholarship for generations to come. His questions determined the agenda for much of the work currently going on in English constitutional and social history. Many of his answers still seem right. He is still a pleasure to read. Of present-day historians, Elton, distinguished student of Tudor political institutions, most closely approximates the aptitudes and preferences of Maitland. Here he performs a useful act of piety by examining the foundations of his predecessor's enduring influence over English historical scholarship. Highly recommended for scholars and specialists.
