Synopsis

This collection will introduce English-speaking audiences to a major figure in the history of Russian philosophy. Underlying Soloviev's entire oeuvre is his millenarian anticipation of the coming Universal Church - all of his writings are underscored by this Christian mysticism. Many of his essays, however, sound remarkably modern. Wozniuk has translated a number of topical pieces in which, for instance, Soloviev argues for women's rights, citizen rights for ethnic and religious minorities, and opposes the death penalty. Wozniuk has provided an introduction and headnotes that highlight the recurring themes that bind this varied body of work together.
