This book takes the mystery out of decorating, and is a useful companion for anyone who wants to create a living space that is uniquely theirs, without having to pay a lot of money. The author shows how the main ingredient of good home design is imagination, and presents solutions for every room. There are also chapters on features such as floor coverings, lighting, windows, halls and entrances. Caroline Atkins is Associate Editor of "House Beautiful", and has contributed to magazines such as "Homes and Gardens" and "Good Housekeeping".

House Beautiful associate editor Atkins intends to provide all the knowledge needed to make practical, economic choices for the beginning decorator but instead merely offers standard advice available elsewhere. While she suggests many do-it-yourself projects for the budget conscious, the instructions are so vague that a novice will waste time and money trying to duplicate the looks. And though various decorating styles are described, there are too few photographs and the majority of those show a rather bland country look. Jill Blake clarifies the basics better in Interior Design on Your Own: The Complete Guide to Home Decorating (LJ 2/15/94), and Creative Interior Design: A Complete Guide to Designing and Decorating Your Home (LJ 10/1/94) is a preferable source for plentiful illustration and practical instructions.
