9780304361922: Trees of Britain and Northern Europe

Britain and Ireland are blessed in their trees. Centuries of introductions, from the Romans to to the great collectors travelling in Asia, Africa and the Americas, have enriched our restricted native tree-flora. Now, thanks to a maritime climate with moderate rainfall and mild winters, more trees grow here, and better, than almost anywhere else in the temperate world. David More and John White offer an unparalleled and illustrated record of our these trees - and their magnificent variety - at the start of the new century. This is the most complete tree book available in English or any other language. The book has been more than twelve years in the making - two years of research, followed by ten years of meticulous painting of trees, bark, leaves and fruits. It describes and illustrates more than 1,000 species and varieties of trees, which we can see in Britain, Ireland and Northern Europe.

About the Author:

David More trained as an artist and worked in the Royal Navy cartographic department anf for the Department of the Environment before becoming a full-time artist. He spent twelve years researching, travelling and drawing to produce the illustrations for this book. John White, who wrote the text, was formerly Research Dendrologist with the Forestry Commission. He has devoted his life to the study of trees and woodlands, and is the author of numerous publications on the trees of the northern hemisphere.

Review:

'Pride of place goes to the reams of paintings by David More, over a decade of work detailing leaves, branches, fruit and above all, stunning paintings of overall trees ... handsome, informative and highly useful' -- PLANT TALK (Oct 03)

'This landmark reference book was a labour of love by David More. He embarked on the project as a private enterprise and spent years travelling, studying, sketching and painstakingly painting every leaf, seed and tree native to thes isles and northwest Europe. The result is a meticulously illustrated and visually thrilling guide to more than 1,000 tree species.' -- BBC GARDENERS WORLD (Dec 03) plus reader offer

(Reviewed with Cassell's Wild Flowers of Britain and Northern Europe) 'Two expensive but true masterpieces that will fill a long-vacant gap in your wildlife library. Superbly illustrated and written, we highly recommend them.' -- ACTIVE (National Trust magazine) Autumn 2003
