9780312006082: Headlines

It is 1949, and in Chicago, all of the elite and powerful are gathering at the mansion of newspaper tycoon Howard Croft Tate to celebrate the twenty-first birthday of his eldest daughter, Morgana. But when the birthday gifts are announced, it is Howard Tate's own gift to his daughter -- his great newspaper, the Chicago Star -- that overshadows all else. When he dies, Howard Tate tells Morgana, the Star will become her paper. And yet, almost from that very day onward, Morgana knows that her father's empire will become the most exhilarating, demanding, and heart-breaking gift she will ever know. For with the Star come a host of effects and obligations that the young Morgana could never have expected; and, beyond the deadlines and the camera flashes, the smart columns, and the blistering headlines, like great rewards and greater risks, painful romance, and--most surprising of all--the need for Morgana to choose between her own family and her responsibility to the public truth. At once sweepingly grand and absorbing, Headlines is full of the Masterton touches that have made his books so successful: an engaging and believable heroine; a breakneck pace; and a panorama of colorful heroes and villains. Newsmen, gangsters, beautiful women, the rich and famous--all make up the lavish tapestry of this saga. Headlines is novel writing on a grand scale; the kind of tale that Graham Masterton has made his own.

From Publishers Weekly:

In Chicago of 1949, newspaper magnate Howard Croft Tate faces a sticky decision: Does he blow the whistle on a mobster whose empire is built on slum housing, or does he knuckle under to blackmail? From the day his headstrong heir Morgana leaves her glittering, 21st birthday bash to save a child from a burning tenement, she crusades to destroy the man her father rightfully fears. To this pot, Masterton (Maiden Voyage adds a headline-grabbing "Hacker," who kills and dismembers women, a sister who steals Morgana's fiance for herself, a mother distraught over the loss of her lover and the usual social whirl of the wealthy. With the exception of a snappy Polish reporter and his photographer sidekick, most of these characters fail to charm or even to sound believable, despite the catchy lingo they spout. Toward the end, the pace becomes frenetic and a few bittersweet twists force Morgana to choose between impulse and responsibility.

From Library Journal:

The setting is 1949 Chicago. The heroine is Morgana Croft Tate, daughter of a super-rich newspaper mogul who informs her on her 21st birthday that the Chicago Star will one day be hers. Morgana's life seems all glamour and excitement until the mayor tries to involve the Star in a crusade to expose slum landlords and clear the slums. Why is Morgana's father refusing to cooperate? Could gangster Enzo Vespucci have some hold over him? While these questions are being resolved, subplots involving Morgana's promiscuous sister, her tentative romance with an ace reporter, and the activities of a demented killer keep the story racing along to a melodramatic climax. While not particularly original, a spunky heroine, lots of action, and plenty of name-dropping add up to a satisfying novel. For popular collections. Beth Ann Mills, New Rochelle P.L., N.Y.
