After Iran's 1979 Islamic revolution and the 1981 murder of Egypt's President Anwar al-Sadat, many observers thought radical Islamic fundamentalists would seize power in the Middle East and especially in Egypt. But these groups did not take over, foment revolutions or even become a threatening opposition. This book explains their failure in Egypt, the most important Arab country and a key Western ally and shows how the fundamentalists' weaknesses and divisions and the clever policies of Egypt's rulers led to their defeat.

About the Author:
Barry Rubin is Director of Global Research in International Affairs (GLORIA), Center of the Interdisciplinary Center (IDC). His books include Revolution Until Victory?, The Transformation of Palestinian Politics, & The Tragedy of the Middle East.
From Library Journal:
Despite their successful assassination of Egyptian President Anwar Sadat in 1981, Muslim fundamentalists have failed to seize and maintain power in Egypt. Rubin, the author of several acclaimed studies on the Middle East, attributes this failure to the fundamentalists' rigidity, contradictory philosophies, and, most importantly, to the observation that their brand of Islam is alien to most Egyptians. The qualities of forgiveness, modesty, clemency, avoidance, and patience as prescribed by the Koran must, according to some radicals, be overruled to establish an Islamic state. In the meantime, current Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak has adopted a more moderate philosophy, allowing the opposing clergy and other groups to function freely, albeit within limits. For Rubin, this astute policy will ensure longevity for the Mubarak regime. For larger Egyptian/Islamic collections.
