The author shares anecdotes about his career as a fine art auctioneer, from his first job application to expert appraiser

From Publishers Weekly:

He started at 17 as a stock boy in a fine art auction gallery in Sussex, England. Here, Harton recalls how, during his 10 years of apprenticeship, he became a connoisseur equally adroit in cosseting eccentric, elderly clients and at wielding the auctioneer's hammer. Though occasionally overwritten in the effort to amuse, his portraits of optimistic sellers of supposedly priceless family heirlooms--and self-styled experts at pre-auction viewings vainly hoping to sniff out buried treasure--have sharp verve. The author also conveys the thrill of finding a trove of Japanese ivories on the Isle of Man and the discovery of a "gravy boat" in a village kitchen that turned out to be a rare chamber pot of the kind used by ladies of Louis XIV's court.

From Library Journal:

Harton's first book glibly recalls his initiation into the auction business in a provincial town in England. His encounters with people who consign their furniture to the gallery for future sales are marvelous. In a typical Harton faux pas , he catches his necktie in a desk drawer while desperately trying to impress the lovely daughter of a client with his knowledge of antiques. His adventures, with the concomitant glimpse into the machinations of a most unpretentious auction gallery, can be enjoyed by a wide audience. As the book ends, Harton is about to make crucial decisions about his future. One hopes we can expect a sequel.
