Provocative title aside, this is literally about birds and bees. Windybank, a journalist and naturalist, has prepared a thorough examination of the courtship and reproductive habits of animals in the wild. She covers the full spectrum of wildlife from single-cell organisms that reproduce asexuality to the higher mammals, some of which have strict species-specific behavioral codes. Windybank describes how sexual behavior in the animal kingdom closely parallels human practices. Many animals favor monogamous relationships, while others have multiple partners and some are even promiscuous and exhibit "deviant" behavior. Chapter sidebars describe a bizarre fact about the sexual antics of a particular species. But, outside of these tidbits, the book's appeal is limited to students of animal behavior--although one might expect a more extensive bibliography in what seems to be a scholarly work. It is, however, well written and includes a very helpful glossary. Wild Sex is an optional purchase.
